Seminar “Cycle of History of the Nobility in the Old Regime: Models of Social and Institutional Reproduction – The Linked Model”

This seminar is part of the “History of the Nobility in the Old Regime: Models of Social and Institutional Reproduction” cycle, which addresses the social and institutional reproduction models of the nobility during the Old Regime, reflecting on the strategies and social paths that characterized the formation and consolidation of noble groups as family institutions.

In this seminar, a specific model of social and institutional reproduction of family groups will be presented, known as the linked model. Through links such as entailments (morgadios) or chapels, the nobility ensured the transmission of an estate that had to be perpetually managed by the family, with its revenues used for the well-being of the souls of the founders and the survival of the familial project.

Case studies related to mainland Portugal, the Azores, and Spain will also be presented, aiming to outline the similarities and differences that characterized the linked model in the Iberian Peninsula during the Old Regime.
